Maps are essential even though I have a GPS. If my
GPS stops working I'm buggered.
Good maps are widely available in developed countries. It is harder to
find accurate maps in others.
For example my Peru map had roads that didn't exist and my Malagasy map
had tarred roads that existed thirty years ago but are impassable by vehicle
today.
