Everything changes over time. This table summarises my experience, but I would suggest using word of mouth and trusting your instincts.

Dealer
Service
Jobs Done
Errors
Reason
KTM Nairobi, Kenya - Changed rear wheel bearing.
47- Broke wheel bearing when removing it.
48 - Hub damaged removing bearing.
Poorly Trained
KTM Joburg,
South Africa
- Rejetted carb after exhaust system change - discovered no compression, -> new piston rings.
- Changed tyres.
None. -
Clayton Enslin, Joburg, South Africa.
(not a dealer)
- Changed inlet cam follower.
- Changed exhaust systems.
- New chain and sprocket set.
- All new wheel bearings.
40 - Engine lost all compression.
Couldn't rejet carb
48 - Rear wheel spacer not replaced.
Lack of supervision
KTM Auckland, New Zealand - 42 - Clutch rivets installed with far too much force leading to a rivet head shearing off. Poor training.
KTM Chillan,
Chile
- Rebuilt engine using all new gearbox bearings and piston. No obvious errors but:
This was probably my biggest mistake.
Engine is now (after 30,000km) noisier than it was before (at 50,000km).
It was originally balanced and rebuilt by Swampy in the UK at 1,000km.
Now I realise how good he is.
-
KTM Sao Paulo, Brazil - Replaced inlet cam follower
- Serviced forks and shock.
22 - Refilled with 600 ml not 420 ml of fork oil. Isolated error.
KTM Lima, Peru - Removed rear subframe to drill out snapped Touratech frame bolt. 10 - Starter solenoid wires misrouted. Coil wires broke off. No service function.
Not a good mechanic.
KTM Cuenca, Ecuador - Tightened triple clamps, - Tightened spokes Overtightened both
17 - triple clamp cracked.
16 - rear whell rim had 10 cracks,
- front wheel made unrideable.
Poorly trained.

Service - 'Don't use':

The golden rule is 'Don't let anyone else touch my bike'.

I do all my own servicing, but what can I do when I don't have the experience to do the work required?

I ask local owners whether the dealer mechanics are any good and act accordingly.

Lessons learnt

'Don't let anyone else touch my bike' unless they are recommended by word of mouth. Trust your instincts.

The two best I have found are Swampy in the UK and Chris at Jungle Junction in Nairobi.
