Airfreight is much faster than sea freight.
It therefore means I don't have to hang around for weeks or months waiting
for Fred to arrive.
On two of my flights: London to New York and Auckland to Cairns I went
from Arrivals to the Cargo area, cleared Fred, put the wheels on and rode
away.
Air freight is calculated on a $ per Kilo basis and is
always the greater of:
- the actual weight or
- the volumetric weight:
= Height x Width x Length / 6,000 (with dimensions
in cm)
- so the smaller the crate the smaller the cost.
To reduce the volume I remove the wheels and handlebars. This more than
halves the total cost.
Fred is high and long for his actual weight so I always pay the volumetric
weight.
E.G. for the London to New York flight the rate is $1.35 /kg.
The actual weight including the crate was 280kg.
The outside dimensions of the crate were: Height 135cm x Width 73cm x
Length 222 cm.
This gave a volumetric weight of: 135 x 73 x 222 / 6,000 = 365 kg.
365 is greater than 280 so I was charged: 365 x $1.35 = $489.10
