The whole of the western seaboard of Peru is desert.

However, about every 100km, there is a river that carries the rain falling in the Andes to the sea. Since pre Colombian times the water has been used to turn the desert into fertile fields. Most of Peru's sugar is grown from these irrigated plantations.

The contrast is extreme.
