This is the largest adobe city in the world. It is a huge site of some 28 square kilometres.

There are nine great compounds built by the Chimu kings. After one died he was entombed and his successor built a new palace and tomb for himself.

The city obtained it’s water from some one hundred and fifty walk in wells. The water table was maintained at an artificially high level by irrigation further up the valley.
