There are two huge pyramids, Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna. The Huaca del Sol was the largest man made structure in the western hemisphere reaching 45m in height. That is, before the Spanish washed half of it way by diverting the river to get at the gold inside. Only about one third remains today due to erosion.

The reliefs and paintings on la Luna are in a much better condition and many were only uncovered in the 1990’s. They were protected from the prevailing winds by their location and sun by being buried under several metres of sand.
